He does have a unique fighting style and definitely feels a few flavors different from the currently playable roster, but the name of the game is to make sure people will want to pay extra money to download the additional characters, and it's hard to say whether Algol has enough star power to accomplish that. Originally appearing as the boss character in Soul Calibur IV, Algol was effectively elevated to the role of primary antagonist of the series seeing as he's the original wielder of Soul Edge (as far as we're aware) and the creator of the Soul Calibur.ĭespite his monumental lore importance, he actually isn't that popular of a character, and given the introduction of a new primary antagonist in Soul Calibur VI, in the form of Azwel, it's questionable whether we need Algol to fill that role or not, especially through DLC. Given the quality and care that the first season's DLC characters received, it feels like Aeon is a bit of a longshot unless they really up the ante with him and give him a bunch of cool new stuff - which isn't out of the realm of possibility, considering the character has changed his weapons and fighting style between titles in the past.įirst appearance: Soul Calibur IV (2008) Latest appearance: Soul Calibur V (2012) Numbers of playable appearances in main games: 2 Popularity poll placing: #33 ![]() ![]() He's also a fairly old character, originating in the series' second game, and has been prevalent throughout the series ever since, though it should be noted that his role in th story is never particularly noteworthy and he's always been something of a side character.ĭespite his legacy value and the ease of adding him because of Lizardfolk already existing as a race in the game, that might actually work against him since it would likely make him feel like a lazy choice or an easy way out for post-launch content. ![]() After all, Character Creation allows you to make your very own lizardperson with one of the movesets present in the game. Because of this, I will be including the characters' poll placings (out of 45 characters) in their entries as well.įirst appearance: Soul Calibur (1998) Latest appearance: Soul Calibur V (2012) Numbers of playable appearances in main games: 4 Popularity poll placing: #26 (when combining Aeon and Lizardman votes)Īeon, or Lizardman as you might know him depending on when you started with the series, is a character that would be exceptionally easy to add to the game. Although it's unclear how big of a role this poll plays or played in roster selections, its very existence has definitely been used as a reference point for the development team. There are three slots to fill in this new season of downloadable content, but I've decided to outline twice that - six characters - who I think have a decent claim to why they would be added.Īlso worth noting is that there was an official Soul Calibur popularity poll conducted in 2015, the full results of which can be found here. There were characters with brand new movesets as well, such as Viola and Z.W.E.I., but given the poor reception to the title and Soul Calibur VI's timeline-bending approach that is essentially a reboot of the franchise which distances it from its predecessor, I'd gauge it very unlikely that anyone from Soul Calibur V will join the roster, at least not in that timeline's form.Īs such, I've taken a look at some notable characters from the Soul series that are conspicuously absent from the game's current roster, and will judge how good or poor their chances seem when commpared against each other. The big outlier is of course Soul Calibur V, which went for a timeskip approach and replacing many old characters with new ones, which was not very well-received at all. This trend continue with our current installment, Soul Calibur VI, which added only Grøh and Azwel as the new cast members. ![]() This can be seen with Soul Calibur III which only had four new characters - Tira, Zasalamel, Setsuka and hidden character Amy - and even more in Soul Calibur IV which only added two brand new fighters with Hilde and Algol. Something interesting that always dawns on me when thinking about Soul Calibur's roster is that they've generally been quite conservative with adding new characters to the franchise, instead putting heavy focus on bringing returning characters back and keeping them interesting, as well as having interesting guest characters join for a one-shot. ![]()
